# ROAS vs MER: Are Your Social Ads Profitable?

Measurement · Reporting

# ROAS vs MER: How to Know If Your Social Ads Actually Make Money

Profit shows up in your bank account, not in your ads dashboard. You need at least one number the platform does not control.

In short

ROAS is the revenue a platform credits to its own ads, divided by what you spent there. MER is your total revenue divided by your total marketing spend. Use ROAS to compare ads within a platform, and MER to judge whether marketing as a whole is paying off. If you sell services rather than products online, neither one is your primary number.

Start here

## Which metric applies to your business

This matters before anything else on the page, because **for a large share of businesses running social ads, ROAS is not available at all.**

| If you are | Your primary number | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Selling products online | MER, with ROAS as a within-platform comparison | Purchase events exist, so both metrics work. MER catches the double counting ROAS misses |
| Selling services, appointments, or estimates | Cost per booked appointment | There is no purchase event for a platform to credit, so ROAS is not measuring anything |
| Long sales cycle, revenue lands weeks later | Cost per qualified lead, then MER monthly | The lag means any weekly revenue metric is measuring last month's work |
| Nonprofit or ministry | Cost per first visit or first gift | The outcome you care about is a person showing up, which no platform can credit |

**Three of those four rows do not use ROAS at all.** If a report you receive leads with ROAS and you sell services, the number is either estimated from something that is not revenue, or it is measuring form fills.

Worth asking which, before you make a budget decision on it.

The comparison

## Why platform ROAS can mislead you

**Each ad platform measures its own contribution, and every platform grades its own homework.** A customer who saw a Facebook ad, searched on Google, and then called you may get counted by more than one of them.

Practitioners running incrementality tests consistently report platform ROAS coming in higher than the measured lift. **That is a widely held observation rather than a single published figure**, and the double-counting logic holds regardless of how large the gap turns out to be in any given account.

| Metric | Formula | Best for | Blind spot |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| ROAS | Platform-credited revenue divided by platform spend | Comparing ads and campaigns on one platform | Can overstate the platform's impact, and the platform decides the number |
| MER | Total revenue divided by total marketing spend | Judging overall marketing health | Does not say which channel did the work |

MER avoids the double counting because it only looks at money in and money out. No platform gets a vote in it.

For service businesses

## Five steps, and where the money stops working

If you sell services instead of products online, revenue arrives weeks after the click. **Track the steps in between, and the ladder tells you where things break.**

1. 1

**Cost per lead.** Spend divided by leads.
2. 2

**Cost per qualified lead.** Spend divided by leads that fit. **A gap between step one and step two means the ad is attracting the wrong people.**
3. 3

**Cost per booked appointment.** Spend divided by appointments. **A gap here is a follow-up problem, not an ad problem.**
4. 4

**Revenue per lead.** Closed revenue divided by total leads.
5. 5

**MER.** Total revenue divided by total marketing spend, reviewed monthly.

Each step tells you where the money stops working, and the step where it breaks tells you whose problem it is.

Go one level down

## Measure at the creative level

**Campaign totals hide the truth.** One strong ad can carry four weak ones, and the average looks fine while most of your budget does nothing.

Motion's 2026 Creative Benchmarks suggest a practical way to find your winners: **flag any creative that spends at least 10 times your account's median spend per ad and at least $500.** Across their dataset of Meta spend from September 2025 to January 2026, which includes the holiday season, 55 percent of all spend landed on winners like those.

Then tag every ad by three traits.

**Format:** demo, testimonial, before-and-after, founder, text card.

**Hook:** confession, bold claim, relatable moment, contrast, curiosity.

**Asset type:** text-only, image with text, customer-style video, high production.

Over time the tags show patterns no single ad can. You will see which hooks win for your business and which formats waste budget, which is a different question from which ad won last week.

The rhythm

## Report on a cadence

| Cadence | Focus | Question it answers |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Weekly | Individual ads and early test reads | What is happening right now? |
| Monthly | Portfolio patterns and audience insights | Why is it happening? |
| Quarterly | Mix changes and outside benchmarks | Where do we go next? |

**Choose one primary number**, usually cost per booked appointment or cost per acquisition. Use secondary metrics like click-through rate and video hold rate **only to explain why the primary number moved**, never as the headline.

Ask these

## Five questions for whoever runs your ads

Including yourself, if that is who runs them.

1. 1

Which specific ads brought in customers last month?
2. 2

What is our cost per booked appointment, and how has it moved?
3. 3

What is our MER this quarter compared with last quarter?
4. 4

How many new, distinct ideas did we test, and how many won?
5. 5

What did we learn that changes next month's plan?

If the report answers with reach, impressions, and likes, ask again.

Common questions

## ROAS and MER, answered

### What is the difference between ROAS and MER?

ROAS is the revenue a platform credits to its own ads divided by what you spent on that platform. MER is total revenue divided by total marketing spend. ROAS compares ads within one platform. MER judges whether marketing as a whole is paying off, and no platform gets a vote in it.

### Should a service business use ROAS?

Generally no, because there is no purchase event for a platform to credit. Cost per booked appointment is the better primary number, with MER reviewed monthly. If a report leads with ROAS and you sell services, ask what revenue figure it is using, since it is either estimated or measuring form fills.

### What is a good ROAS?

It depends on your margins. A ROAS that looks strong can still lose money if your costs are high. Work backward from profit rather than from an industry benchmark, since the same number means different things at different margin structures.

### Why is my platform ROAS higher than my actual revenue suggests?

Because each platform measures its own contribution independently. A customer who saw a Facebook ad, searched on Google, then called you can be counted by more than one platform. MER avoids that double counting by looking only at total money in against total money out.

### How do I know if my social ads are actually profitable?

Compare total revenue with total marketing spend, track cost per booked appointment, and review results by individual creative rather than by campaign. When all three improve together, the ads are working. When only the platform's own number improves, they may not be.

Motion, Creative Benchmarks 2026, for the winner definition and spend concentration figure. Dataset covers Meta spend from September 2025 to January 2026 and includes the holiday shopping season. The observation that platform ROAS runs higher than measured incremental lift is practitioner consensus reported through Logical Position and Orange MonkE citing incrementality vendors, rather than a single published measurement. Reporting cadence and the primary-number rule are CCG operating guidance.
